There’s no denying that the foliage around us is beginning to change hues, and the scent of the crisp air of autumn is now here. Some of the most beautiful happenings during the season is when it actually changes. Out of all four seasons, autumn has to be my most favorite and although, my birthday is in late July, nothing compares to this season of transformation. All the layers you can add on to get into your coziest mood. Moreover, on those chilly yet, comfy days you naturally just want to wrap yourself up in a warm blanket, with your most atheleisurely sweats on. Grab a cup of your favorite herbal tea and veg out to a vintage flick on TV.
A vintage flick like the classic romantic dramas of the 1990’s. One that comes to mind so aptly is the 1997 love story, Love Jones. There is just something about the relationship trials between the two main characters Nina Mosely (Nia Long) and Darius Lovehall (Larenz Tate) and all their very cozy moments. Which also included some of the best jazz music you’ve ever heard.
This cult classic provided so much inspiration that it enticed me to revisit Nina’s looks throughout the entire film. Revealing that she pretty much wore some of the best fall essentials we can totally rock today. Considering the film took place during the autumn and winter months in Chicago, I’d have to wait until December to wear such pieces in Los Angeles. Thus, below you’ll find some of the most timeless and dare I say again, coziest forever looks to wear as soon as, those leaves begin to change —Charlie Brown’s Christmas song resounds.
The epitome of comfort is atheleisure wear. Which can include an oversized hoodie, a pair of joggers and a silk scarf to play while make your weekend morning moves. This is not only an indoor/outdoor look of ultimate leisure, it is the perfect combination of pieces to be functional and still be causal enough to meet-up for brunch with your bestie.
A black ribbed turtleneck sweater is a coveted autumn staple, paired with black satin trousers make for a chic, classic and alluring look. Which can double both as a practical outfit for the office as well as, out for an evening of cocktails. Finish the look with some simple sliver posts and to add some flair to the “all-black everything” ensemble, a pair of silver metallic booties would complete it.
It adds that extra punch of funky to your look with an easy going heel. No one wants to be rocking high heels at work and then in the evening, too. At least not me, I save the high heels for after work, they don’t deserve my illustrious height play between those cubicles.
1. Elizabeth and James Iven satin flared pants, $345.00, 2. Allude Ribbed cashmere turtleneck sweater, $380.00, 3. David Yurman Sculpted Cable Earrings, $325.00, 4. Isabel Marant Dawell metallic leather ankle boots, $540.00
Technically, the satin blouse should only really be worn between the autumn and winter months. A silvery satin blouse is a great look to wear for a date night or perhaps to a cocktail party in late November. It can even be worn for one of those holiday parties on your jam packed soiree list; you’ll have in December. Either way, I am so down for reviving the smooth and gleaming always riche look of a satin blouse.
Pairing it with a gray sleeveless cotton top to play with color coordinates and texture provides the fresh playfulness it requires. While the pearl posts keeps the look classically inline.
Then there’s the (TDLBWC) “The Definitive Long Black Wool Coat,” a fall and winter season must-have; that, should always be in your closet as a staple piece. It can be worn in tandem with a dressed down athleisure look, consisting of joggers or denim jeans and running sneakers. Nonetheless, the coat can be worn in a more upscale manner that allows you to ditch the kicks for heels, and wear a short dress in the middle of autumns chill.
The long and often heavy coat will definitely keep you warm and toasty while heading to your destination.
The easy way to transition denim overalls, from summer to fall is to make sure you buy them in a dark wash. Denim overalls have made a tremendous comeback over the past couple of years; making for a cool, retro and very now statement to wear. These updated denim overalls include the cutest bow appliqués, which can be worn with a black sleeveless top—that is only when you have a substantially warmer coat to cover up with. (See TDLBWC).
Though, I would recommend a bomber jacket to play up the casual street chic appeal. This outfit pairs perfectly with the black dad cap worn backwards because, 1997. Accessorize the look with a thin silver chain that has a single pearl which, adds a girlish touch to the more tomboyish look. Keep it neutral with a nude or off-white nail lacquer like Nina’s wearing, that’s refined and pretty.

Can one truly survive through the chilly, rainy season without the classic rain coat? Yes, of course. Although, its purpose is to not only shield you from the often frightfully cold rain, it is also to be stylishly functional; over top of your day or night ensemble. In keeping with the monochromatic theme—Long’s character (Nina Mosely) was a moody photographer who wore a lot of black, white and gray—the button down white blouse and black ballet sweater serves as an update on her black cropped sweater vest.
In which, she wore to recite her poem about Darius. Pairing the look with a deep chocolate hued matte lip, for an indispensable ‘90s tribute. One should be in your bag at all times.
