Jay-Z and Beyoncé

On Thursday evening Beyoncé and Jay-Z were accepted the Vanguard Award at last night’s GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. It was a graceful moment, done with style. The two were introduced by Beyoncé’s longtime stylist Ty Hunter, writer Janet Mock and director Lena Waithe. The couple each spoke about their personal experiences with their LGQBT family members who helped and continue to shape their lives. Jay-Z spoke of his mother Gloria Carter, her own coming out story and referencing her acceptance speech from last year’s ceremony; in which she was honored a special recognition award for the song “Smile.”

Beyoncé then expressed in moving admiration of her late Uncle Johnny who helped to raise her and her sister Solange. “He lived his truth, he was brave and unapologetic during a time when this country was not as accepting,” she said while becoming emotional while recollecting her uncle’s battle with HIV. “I’m hopeful that his struggle served to open pathways for other young people to live more freely. LGBT rights are human rights.” A poignant speech the christened the beautiful night of inclusivity and love
